si1pa: i can do that
gaansifo: and anyone can put a chair in the middle of the room and call it an artpiece
gaansifo: and then i'll sit on it and smear blood all over myself and call it performance art

gaansifo: yeah!!!
gaansifo: thats crazy shit right there!
si1pa: thats not art
gaansifo: i had a reading for a class
gaansifo: said... these 2 dudes pissing on each other is performance art
si1pa: EWWWW
gaansifo: i think art is... painting, drawing, sculpture, lithography, etching... things like that
gaansifo: i think u have to study it, and practice it, and find out what u really can do

I had a conversation a while back about what is art, and we couldn't really define it. Personally, I think that anything that isn't done for necessity can be considered art. Everyone has to wear clothes to stay warm, but their choice of colors, fabrics, styles is art. Everyone has to eat to stay alive, but adding spices, other ingredients all to create a dish is art. That said, I still don't "get" modern art, but I respect someone's ability to call it art.

I am wondering, if I design at work (the company), and I work/freelance to get paid, otherwise I have no one to support me, so in order to survive (which is for necessity)...am I doing art at all? Or there are millions and millions art pieces that were commissioned by the state or the pope (Catholic Church)...Is the Sistine Chapel is "just" a building?

Yeah, but work is not really necessary. You could sit be homeless, as long as you eat, drink and stay warm - you'll survive. Your choice of job, and how you go about it can be art.

Maybe it's the mindset you have. If you FEEL like you're ONLY doing something to survive, then it's not art. Wehn you decide to do more than JUST ENOUGH, and put your personality into it, it becomes art? Just a thought.
